Polyelectrolyte chain dimensions and concentration fluctuations near phase boundaries

چکیده
We have measured the temperature ~T! dependence of the correlation length ~j! for concentration fluctuations in aqueous solutions of sodium–poly~styrene sulfonate! with a fixed level of added barium chloride salt. Apparent critical behavior is observed upon lowering the temperature to precipitation phase boundaries that complements our earlier work on salt-dependent behavior. We interpret experimental deviations from j versus T as crossover from the mean field to the Ising universality class. We also measured the radius of gyration (Rg) of labeled chains and j for semidilute polyelectrolyte solutions at low ionic strengths. We recovered the familiar result of j scaling with polymer concentration (Cp) and degree of polymerization ~N!, such that j5(7369) NCp 20.4860.03 @Å# , and using SANS high concentration labeling Rg5(400628)Cp 20.2460.01 @Å# ~for N5577) and Rg5(2.862.1)N 0.660.1 @Å# ~for Cp5206 gL ), respectively. The indices recovered are in agreement with theoretical predictions for low ionic strength semidilute solutions. Such experiments offer insight into relatively unexplored phase behavior in charged macromolecular solutions. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1592496#

Protein-Polyelectrolyte Phase Boundaries
The separation of proteins by polyelectrolyte coacervation or precipitation is based on electrostatically-driven complex formation. We have investigated complexation between the globular protein BSA and the polyelectrolyte poly(dimethyldially1ammonium chloride) (PDMDAAC) using light-scattering techniques to monitor solution turbidity. Turbidimetric pH titrations were used to determine the speci...
متن کاملAdsorption and collapse transitions in a linear polymer chain near an attractive wall.
We deduce the qualitative phase diagram of a long flexible neutral polymer chain immersed in a poor solvent near an attracting surface using phenomenological arguments. The actual positions of the phase boundaries are estimated numerically from series expansion up to 19 sites of a self-attracting self-avoiding walk in three dimensions. In two dimensions, we calculate phase boundaries analytical...
متن کاملElectrostatic correlations and the polyelectrolyte self energy.
We address the effects of chain connectivity on electrostaticfluctuations in polyelectrolyte solutions using a field-theoretic, renormalizedGaussian fluctuation (RGF) theory. As in simple electrolyte solutions [Z.-G. Wang,Phys. Rev. E 81, 021501 (2010)], the RGF provides a unified theory forelectrostatic fluctuations, accounting for both dielectric and charge correlationeffects in terms of the ...
متن کاملEquilibrium Swelling Study of Cationic Acrylamide-Based Hydrogels: Effect of Synthesis Parameters, and Phase Transition in Polyelectrolyte Solutions
Cationic copolymer gels of acrylamide and [(methacrylamido) Propyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) were synthesized by free radical aqueous solution polymerization. The Taguchi method, a robust experimental design, was employed for the optimization of the synthesis based on the equilibrium swelling capacity of the hydrogels. Based on Taguchi method a standard L16 orthogonal array with fiv...
متن کاملComplex coacervation: a field theoretic simulation study of polyelectrolyte complexation.
Using the complex Langevin sampling strategy, field theoretic simulations are performed to study the equilibrium phase behavior and structure of symmetric polycation-polyanion mixtures without salt in good solvents. Static structure factors for the segment density and charge density are calculated and used to study the role of fluctuations in the electrostatic and chemical potential fields beyo...
